I first saw a field of hawkweed or paintbrush in late June and picked one up to get a closer look and was amazed by the color and pattern of this wildflower. Then I read the story behind its two names and incorporated the information into the rendering I made of this flower.

I realized that the side view of an early stage of this flower is similar to a paintbrush and tried to create this possibility in my painting of the hawkweed in the lower right image.

The top view of the mature Hawkweed resembles a painter's palette which I have placed full center. The yellow within with its radiating lines in the flower suggests the creative energy of the artist.

The image has a black metal frame that extends the dark background in a complementary way. The hawk on the top right of the painting has an orange eye in keeping with the Native American legend  that the hawk gets its keen vision from eating the flower of this weed that grows so abundantly.
